In 1996 as a tribute and in memory of her younger son Philip, who died in a U.S. military helicopter crash, Katy created Philip’s Granary® a 501 ( c) ( 3 ) nonprofit corporation and Philip's Granary® Coloring/Storybook. To-date, more than 60,000 books with crayons have been delivered to children around the world.

In recent years, she and her husband Garth have been involved in humanitarian aid activities and were instrumental in initiating through their local Rotary clubs, the development of a feeding and vocational center for poverty-stricken children living in a remote area of Nicaragua.

In 2004-05 she served as District Governor for Rotary International. Her leadership responsibilities consisted of 54 Rotary clubs and 3,400 members in District 6670 in southwest Ohio. During her tenure and in celebration of Rotary’s 100 year anniversary, she helped create a project that brought educational scholarships to children living in a garbage dump and 85 wheelchairs to immobile people in Mexico.

Katy believes that every child should have the essentials of life: proper nutrition, clothing, shelter, safe drinking water, primary health care, and the opportunity to receive an education. IIn 2006, the Philip's Granary board of directors changed its focus to be able to serve a greater population of children in need.  Philip's Granary® is now doing business as Children Without™, and the mission of Children Without™ is: to improve the dignity and quality of life for children around the world.
